This bronze statuette of Sakhmet, the lioness goddess of war, portrayed as a ruling queen (her hands resting on her thighs) belongs to the refined style seen during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut and King Thutmose III. Yet the hand position is typical of the 12th Dynasty.
Goddess Sakhmet, the ‘eye of Ra’, represents the destructive power of the sun at its apex. Daughter of Ra, she is the defender of the divine order. With Ptah and Nefertem, Sakhmet forms the Memphis triad.
It is a shame that the hieroglyphs inscribed around the pedestal were deliberately erased and lost forever.
